My honest assessement. I have seen this dog in the flesh in 1991. It is from Olympos mountain but was a pet for many years in Athens. In the photo it is quite old and died a few years later. It was shown as simply a Greek Sheepdog/Hellenikos Poimenikos at a local show. No one ever, then or afterwards, described it as "Alexander's Dog". A very nice dog up close. Not too large but imposing.

Those were my initial thought as well, Poimen. I've seen this dog myself (if I remember correctly he was around 26 inches tall) and also other photos of him and it was always listed as a Hellenikos Poimenikos, but when I was talking to people about him, there were three camps, the first that was of the opinion that this is just a Hellenikos Poimenikos, the second group said that it was a poor example of the Hellenikos Poimenikos and probably a cross, while the third camp was dismissive of any Hellenikos Poimenikos categorization and claimed that this is a typical Ski lot tou Alexandrou. I must admit that it looks the same as the longhaired Alexandrou dogs I've seen, but this doesn't necessarily mean it is one. And now, almost 13 years later, someone sends me the photo of the very same dog under the name Alexandrou. While we can't be 100% sure here, I'll say that I personally believe that this is in fact either a pure Alexandrou or a cross between a Hellenikos Poimenikos and a Skilos tou Alexandrou. In any case, a beautiful Moloss.

Wolf I agree with you on most counts. My knowledge is inadequate for classifying the above dog.

Poimen, your input and knowledge is very much appreciated.

Just a couple of years ago I saw a similar dog near Athens. I will try to trace it and if possible I will post a picture. Unfortunatey my knowlede about dog breeds is very limited, therefore I would appreciate if you could provide some further info. By the way, does any one know where I can obtain info about the Greek Breeds (I am interested in all the mollosser breeds) as well as breeders infos. Thank you in advance!!

Talos please post a photo of the dog you talked about. It would be interesting comparing the two. I can provide some info on Greek breeds in general.

For Greek breeds - search for: Cretan Greyhound, Greek Greyhound, Greek Sheepdog, Molossus, and the Suliot Dog. I may have missed some. You could start a discussion about it in the forum.

Some Balkans looks for their identity and they want to change the history. The same happened with the dog of the photo. For me it isn’t oritzinal Hellenic and it’s reminding me uncle- Lampro. Uncle Lampro lives in Athens and he has mix maremano Hellenic Poimenikos and Pyrenean Mastif.

P.S: His name is Roussos and he have died.
